There are several lasers used by surgeons when performing LASIK. In the United States these lasers are all FDA approved for the indicated prescriptions that you need to have your eyes fixed for. This means doctors will rarely use a laser ?off label? in other words outside of the approved prescription when performing LASIK. This FDA approval also limits advertising. So if you see some odd LASIK name in marketing material it is likely that the doctor made up the name outside of FDA requirements. If you are not sure about FDA approval for a particular laser you can search the FDA websites for device approval information.

The experience of the LASIK surgeon is a big indicator of the success of the procedure. The more experience the surgeon has the more likely it is that your post-surgery vision will be 20/20 or better. Thus, look for clinics that have performed at least 20,000 LASIK procedures.

The price you pay for LASIK is not an indicator of quality. The experience of the surgeon and what post-operative checkups are included. The average price for LASIK in the United States is ~$1399 per eye. Some competitive markets such as Denver, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Phoenix have clinics offering LASIK for as little as $499 an eye. That's great for people that live in those cities. Take advantage of the low prices! There have also been a few Groupon LASIK deals which have varied from $499 to $2099 per eye. The upper end of this price range is really not a deal and we?ve been surprised that Groupon offered those. Again, the price of LASIK is not an indicator of the quality.
